Broadband Payment Terminals: Getting Started

Find out what you need to do before your new Streamline broadband card payment terminal is installed.

Before you start

Take a look over this quick guide and make sure you have the necessary equipment in place before placing your order for a new broadband card payment terminal.

We don't charge for our technicians to install your card terminal, but if the required equipment is not in place when they call, we will have to charge a fee for their time.

What you need before installation

Before your new broadband card payment terminal can be installed, you will need:

  • A broadband internet connection - the terminal will not work if you have a dial-up connection
  • A high speed router - with one free Ethernet port for each terminal you want to install

  • Ethernet cable - sufficient length is required to connect the router to where your terminal is located. This cable is also known as Cat5. If you need to pass the terminal over a counter to a customer, remember to allow for extra cable

Router settings

Installing a new broadband card payment terminal is relatively straightforward. For information, the technical router settings needed for the terminal to work are:

  • Internet access for outbound traffic enabled - neither IPSec connections nor a virtual private network (VPN) will work with our broadband card payment terminals
  • DHCP enabled
  • MAC filtering disabled

These tend to be factory settings for shop purchased routers. Provided you haven't re-configured the router, there should be no problems installing the terminal.

Configuring your router

If you have a broadband router which is controlled by a PC, you may have to adjust the router settings through your PC before the connection to the broadband terminal works properly.
If you are unfamiliar with the router settings, we recommend you get a computer engineer to check them before our engineer calls.
You cannot change the router settings using our broadband card payment terminal.

Firewalls

You will need to have a suitable firewall installed and enabled on your network (PC / router). Some firewalls may need additional configuration to process transactions from our broadband card payment terminals. Sorry - but we can't help you configure a firewall.
