There is much concern over the perceived lack of security of transaction data when trading or purchasing across the Internet. However, there are many practices that can be adopted to minimise these risks. Simple measures, like regular back-ups, a firewall to block unwanted traffic and basic virus protection procedures may be all your company needs.
Visa and MasterCard have jointly developed a standard for merchants who store, process or otherwise have access to Cardholder information. It details the measures that you should take to ensure that the Cardholder data you handle is secure. This standard is called the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) and is also endorsed by American Express, JCB and Discover.
