Security Mechanisms

The factors you need to consider when deciding upon security mechanisms.

POS Terminal Help: Security Mechanisms

The type and sophistication of security mechanisms supported by POS equipment devices will depend on a number of factors including the age of the equipment, the technologies the equipment employs (i.e. magnetic stripe or chip), cost of equipment, the acquiring systems supporting the POS equipment, etc.

When purchasing POS equipment you should consider the following security issues:

  • Prohibition of the display, storage and printing of sensitive data.
  • Modification of terminal parameters.
  • Protection of POS equipment functions (implementation of password).
  • Protection of source code.

POS device serial numbers

Wherever possible, POS equipment serial numbers, that are used to identify the terminal in a card transaction, should be hard-coded into the device hardware or firmware. This will minimise the possibility of illegally modifying a POS equipment serial number to perform account number testing.
